The words are on the streets, carried by non-conformist hands, looking for exits. The messages connected to gestures exhibit a collective voice, express the common malaise that transforms manifestations into a form of power. The word reveals the scream in a desire to reach. Aware of these voices that represent crowds, Fabrizio Contarino transforms posters into drawings, proposing a careful look at each phrase. The copy in this case allows an approximation and re-creation that links the word to the image, converts the text into drawing. The posters, excluded from their context, present what has passed. However, it is a past somehow present, because the artist seeks to be observing what is around him in order to produce a second voice.
Fabrizio Contarino opts not for photography but for drawing in black and white. Thus, he does not capture the images instantly, but slowly, resuming a manufacturing process. Reproduction is connected to the editing process that denotes a selective gaze of the artist. In his latest project, PIGS POWER, Contarino appropriates the pejorative acronym, used particularly by the British press to refer to European Union countries: Portugal, Italy, Greece and Spain. The demonstrations currently taking place in these countries are observed and empowered by the artist, creating an insistence of the hearing through the repetition of words.
