Cerrado Por Vacaciones

Cerrado por vacaciones – 2017
Pencil on paper, variable dimensions, installation 150x30x30cm
In Cerrado por vacaciones, the representation of the sea moves away from its idyllic and tourist image to reveal a landscape loaded with tensions. Through a series of pencil drawings, the sea’s surface is presented as a serene reflection, but beneath this calm emerge the forces that shape contemporary maritime space. The title, Cerrado por vacaciones (Closed for Holidays), invites reflection on the sea as a place of escape and leisure, while alluding to its connection with the dynamics of mobility and control that run through the Mediterranean.
This installation is part of a series of works that address current political issues such as migration and border controls. The works not only reflect the political status quo but invite the beholder to perceive current circumstances from a standpoint of the past, and how these have developed ever since. Here, the sea becomes more than just a landscape—it is a threshold between the desire for escape and the complex realities that shape its geography. The work invites us to reconsider our gaze upon the sea: a space where bodies meet and are separated, and where the stories of migration and exile intertwine with the myths of freedom and relaxation.
