Collateral Events – 2010/2012
Installation, 160 mixed media on paper

The quote “it is easier to imagine an end to the world than an end to capitalism,” attributed to both Fredric Jameson and Slavoj Žižek, encompasses the essence of capitalist realism. Capitalist realism is loosely defined as the dominant conception that capitalism is the only viable economic system and thus, there can be no imaginable alternative.
I developed this project collecting, as it occurs, texts and photographs of international protests, ranging from October 2010 up until the strikes “occupy” movement, which paralyzed several cities around the World on the 15th of October of 2011. I accumulated over 3000 images using social networks. Of this collection 160 became drawings.
The idea that the system can be changed was still concrete. It was the last 21st century utopian social movement and the protester was the person of the year of “Time” magazine cover.
The time spent drawing allowed me to reflect upon events that I depicted, remembering them and thinking of them as history. Although each person depicted in this series, offers an individual response to the situation he or she was in, the sum of the representations might set a connection between the events of the past and their future.
